External Stye

External Stye is one of the most common eyelid infections. It is a bacterial infection that affects the oil glands or eyelash follicles on the edge of the eyelid. A stye appears as a painful red swelling resembling a small pimple and can cause noticeable discomfort in the eye. However, it is usually a simple condition that can be easily treated with proper diagnosis.

What is an External Stye?

An External Stye (External Stye) is an acute inflammation caused by bacteria, most commonly staphylococcus, occurring in the oil glands located at the roots of the eyelashes. It typically appears on the outer edge of the eyelid and is accompanied by pain, redness, and localized swelling.

Symptoms of External Stye

  • Painful red swelling on the eyelid margin
  • Sensation of a foreign body in the eye
  • Excessive tearing
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Appearance of a white or yellow head (pus) in some cases

Causes of Stye Development

A stye occurs due to blockage and inflammation of the oil glands caused by bacterial infection. The most prominent factors that increase the likelihood of developing a stye include:

  • Poor hand hygiene and frequent touching of the eyes
  • Use of contaminated or expired cosmetics
  • Chronic eyelid inflammation (Blepharitis)
  • Wearing contact lenses without proper sterilization
  • Weakened immunity or stress

Is a Stye Contagious?

Yes, the bacteria causing the stye can spread from person to person or from one eye to the other. Therefore, it is important to maintain personal hygiene and avoid sharing items such as towels or cosmetics.

How is the Condition Diagnosed?

An external stye is easily diagnosed through clinical examination at Dr. Yazan Salama’s clinic, where the eyelid is evaluated and similar conditions such as chalazion or other infections are ruled out.

Treatment of External Stye

In most cases, the stye disappears within a few days with appropriate treatment:

1. Warm Compresses This is the main step in treatment. It helps open the glands, drain pus, and reduce inflammation.

2. Antibiotics The doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointments in cases that require them.

3. Avoid Squeezing or Pressing Do not attempt to drain the stye manually to avoid spreading the infection or causing complications.

4. Minor Medical Intervention In cases that do not respond to treatment, the stye may be opened and drained with a simple procedure in the clinic.

When Should You Visit the Doctor?

  • The stye persists for more than a week
  • Increased pain or swelling
  • The condition affects vision
  • Recurrent styes

Prevention Tips

  • Wash hands regularly
  • Avoid touching the eyes
  • Clean the eyelids periodically
  • Replace old cosmetics
  • Proper care of contact lenses
